Underrated Christmas Markets in Europe
Okay, okay, I know Christmas is done with (for now), but before you go ahead and book that early bird offer for Winter Wonderland 2024, you might want to know about some other amazing options for the Christmas Markets in Europe!
Empty ice rink at Dunkerque (Dunkirk)’s Christmas Market!
Dunkerque, France
Dunkerque (Dunkirk) is THE MOST underrated little French town in my opinion! The Market is situated in the middle of the Place de Jean Bart, in a small square with lovely shops and cafes around the outside. The Grand Morien is perfect for a full sit down meal, and there is a beautiful little patisserie in the main square that I can’t for the life of me remember the name of! You’ll know it when you see it. AND because it’s so underrated, you’ll have a practically empty ice rink to visit too!
Southampton, England
Southampton’s Christmas Markets can be busy but well worth a visit! Even though the town centre does get busy for Christmas, it’s still nowhere near as busy as some of London’s Christmas markets or others in major cities in Europe. Right in the heart of the town centre, Southampton’s Christmas Market is perfect place to grab some churros while Christmas shopping.
Edinburgh, Scotland
Edinburgh has to get a mention! Think Winter Wonderland but smaller and Scottish - lots of fair rides, food stalls, and even ice skating!
Lille, France
Lille is a pretty stunning city in France and you could easily spend a few days here! The Christmas market is pretty big, the Christmas shopping options are pretty amazing, the only downside is how busy it is! Aside from the crowds, you could have a great time here and have some decent French crepes instead of the overpriced food at Winter Wonderland in London.
Bruges, Belgium
The Bruges (Brugge) Christmas markets are a bit smaller than Lille, and sadly just as busy, but again, why would you want Christmassy chocolate from anywhere other than Belgium? Options for shopping are a bit more limited, but there are still some great places to find last minute Christmas presents or to treat yourself! It’s worth a visit to the Finest Belgian Chocolates shop, and also to the Pandora store (make sure you ask to see the Bruges/Belgium limited edition collections!)
