Flying Blue - A Guide to KLM Air Miles
If you’re planning a family trip to France or the Netherlands any time soon, it’s likely you will fly with KLM (Royal Dutch Airlines) or Air France. These airlines aren’t part of One World or Star Alliance, and they have their own air miles scheme. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to maximise your points with a Flying Blue Account before you book your trip!
1. Sign up to Flying Blue
This part is really easy! Straight from the KLM home screen, you can log in or sign up (top right corner) and this automatically creates you a Flying Blue account. There’s no separate website to click onto.

You’ll then be assigned your Flying Blue Number and your traveller status which you can see in your profile. First off, you will have Explorer Status unless you have flown with KLM, Air France, or one of their other airline partners before, but you can move up the ranks the more you travel and the more points you earn with Flying Blue.
2. Sign your kids up to Flying Blue!
If you are a big family like us, this is really important! We have 5 members of our family and anyone over the age of 2 can have a Flying Blue account. So bring out those old, embarrassing email addresses that you thought wouldn’t be fit for purpose anymore - because they are fit for signing your kids up to a Flying Blue account and maximising those air miles and points!
As soon as our youngest turns 2, guess what, they’re getting their own account too!
3. Create a Flying Blue Family
Now you need to invite all of the users you just created to join your Flying Blue Family. This means that you will collect air miles for every passenger on any flights that you book, and EVERYONE’S air miles can be transferred to the main account, making it much easier to then redeem your air miles on your next trip!
